I’m fairly new to leatherworking but, I was trying to find a better place to buy leather. I ordered a small piece that I thought was a good quality. You can see in this picture that it is has waves (un-even) and has lines the length of the piece. Maybe you can direct me to a place I can buy better leather.

Hey Art! Sorry to hear you’re not happy with the quality. Perfection is of course never a thing with full grain leather, but it does look like you got a piece that we wouldn’t normally send out. I’d be happy to arrange for return if you’d like, just give me a call or email and ask for Pat.

  3. David S. (verified owner)

I called and ask if it was supple, or soft and was told it was, but it is not. Perhaps I need to send them a piece that I got else where so that they know what soft is, meaning not stiff. There service was fine though.

  4. Pat@MontanaLeatherCompany (store manager)

Hey David! I’m not sure how the confusion arose exactly, but veg tan leather like this is generally as stiff as it gets with leather. We can arrange for a return to be made on your current piece, as well as find a better match for what you need. Just give us a call at 406-245-1660 or email us at [email protected].

Q & A

Ask a question
Would these leather pieces be a suitable material to cut insoles from? Ian Rudie asked on January 21, 2023

Hey Ian! You certainly can cut from these to make insoles. Typically though, insoles are cut from sole bends that are a bit stiffer that typical veg tan leather like Hermann Oak. We have sole bends on the website here as well, just do a search for them and they'll pop up.

Can you tell me what part of the animal this would be cut from? Gabriel asked on November 26, 2022

Hey Gabriel! These are cut from Hermann Oak veg tan leather sides, from the back down to the belly. Horizontally, the pieces can come from anywhere from the butt to the shoulder.
