What are some other items I might need to make a belt?

There are other items besides dye and stamping tools you may need to make a good quality belt. These sometimes get overlooked, so make sure to review this list, especially if you’re new to making belts.

  • Try an edger to take off the sharp, hard corners of the belt
  • Get the necessary punches to make belt holes, slots and strap ends
  • Use a glycerine bar to smooth the edges and back of the belt
  • Make sure to secure the belt with a leather loop
  • Get some snaps as needed
  • And lastly, you will of course want to get a belt buckle

    I’ve used another brand belt blank. I wasn’t happy. I purchased a couple of these. It’s a night and day difference.They were also a bit cheaper. The one I’ve completed is beautiful. The edges are smooth as glass and the dye penetrates evenly.

    Top notch leather for sure. It is thick for a belt but in my opinion someone should offer 13 to 15oz leather blanks. No need to attach a liner or 2nd piece to it.

    I received the blank in a compact and sturdy box, and the blank was rolled nicely, inside out to protect the smooth side, which I absolutely appreciate. It was in total about 57″ long, and I’d say 95% clean. It was one of two little markings that would show if left natural. I don’t expect a completely clean strap because hide naturally has variations. Compared to any other blanks I’ve gotten from anyone else, it was a very clean piece.

    The piece beveled and cut very nicely, ive never used Hermann Oak before and found it’s a very dense and “full” feeling leather. Very high quality. I didn’t need to do too much Skiving at the bend before it bent comfortably, and it took dye beautifully as you can see in the pictures. I use an airbrush and it took only two passes to completely cover the belt, using Fiebings Pro dye mahogany.

    It took oil nicely. It’s got the perfect balance of stifness and suppleness. Some leathers are so stiff they crack, while others are so floppy they shouldn’t even be called belts. This struck a perfect balance. Not to mention the price point, $20.00 and free shipping!!

    Thank you Montana Leather Company for offering such fantastic leather, and so long as the quality is maintained, I will be using y’all from now on as my main belt blank supplier!

    It’s properly made and inspected. It’s obviously a little more expensive than Amazon products because it’s actually good. And you usually get plenty of extra leather. It’s usually around 60″ long or more.

    Decent leather but this second batch of belt blanks seemed very dry. Almost too dry. First one I ordered was perfectly fine but these new ones seem strangely light and dry with very slightly crumbly edges.

Hey Mario, it depends on what end result you're after, but you most likely don't want anything thicker than 2 ounces for a liner.

Hey Manny, we do offer stirrup leathers out of our skirting leather, which will be in a 15 ounce weight and come in either 2 1/2" or 3" widths.

Good Morning MTL, Hopefully an easy answer to a silly question... Can the belt blanks be used to make a "Strop" for knife/blade sharpening? The belt blanks seem to have the dimensions that I need. If there is a better leather for this purpose that you would suggest please feel free to do so. SANCHEZ asked on June 21, 2023

Hello! Yes, these belt blanks can be used for making strops, just make sure you apply some jeweler's rouge so that you get the best possible sharpening!

What is the difference on thickness between a 1.5" and 2" 14 ounce leather belt? Is the wider 2" less thick than the 1.5"? Michael Scott asked on June 4, 2023

Hey Michael, all the belt blanks are the same thickness at 8-9 ounce, or 1/8", regardless of the width.
